This is an update of a previous map.

The Anne Arundel County Public School System updated its COVID data dashboard today. It reflects cases where contract tracing has been completed and data fully entered as of noon on September 20, 2021. IT does not include cases in which tracing, documentation, or determination are still in progress. The data dashboard was due to be updated on Wednesday, September 22, 201, but they decided to update it early.

According to the data dashboard, 1,092 students and 21 staff are currently quarantine. There are 170 students and 14 staff with active cases. The cases are as distributed as follows: 9 student cases at charter/contract schools; 76 student cases at elementary schools; 33 cases at middle schools; 51 cases at high schools; and 1 case at a specialty center.

The map shows the active COVID-19 case in Anne Arundel County Public Schools by feeder system as of noon on September 20, 2021. The map includes student and staff active cases. According to the map the feeder system with the most active case, 24 is the North County High School feeder system: 3 high school cases; 4 middle school cases; and 15 elementary school cases. The feeder system with the least active cases is the South River High School feeder system: 1 high school case and 4 elementary school cases. This is an update of a previous map.

I decided to see if I could make the Anne Arundel County Public School COVID-19 table I published yesterday a more usable table by eliminating schools with no active cases. I think it is prettier, but it might be less useful for people searching for their particular school.

I have improved my COVID cases by feeder system for Anne Arundel County Public School System map. Adding the names of each of the elementary and middle schools in each feeder system would be time-consuming, but the totals for each type were fairly easy to add. I totaled up the cases using a pivot table I built in Excel, then I imported the data into Datawrapper. I matched the data by the high school of each feeder system. I have had the issue of the mapping system “accepting” this data on the technical front.

Data Notes

The feeder system was as reported by the Anne Arundel County Public School System. Total active cases include student and teacher/staff cases. Please visit the AACPS COVID 19 Dashboard for more details about the data.

As of September 15, 2021, there were 89 active cases: 85 students and 4 staff. There were 578 students and 4 staff quarantining. The number of current quarantine cases above includes those who are COVID-19 positive through confirmed testing, those who have been designated as having COVID-like symptoms, and those who are probable cases as defined below on this page. It also includes those who have been determined to be close contacts of those persons and who are not fully vaccinated. The data includes cases traced in schools as well as those involving AACPS students that are traced in the community and have no immediate impact on schools.

Total Reported Cases by Feeder System

According to the map, at 12 active cases, the Old Mill High School feeder system has the most active cases. There were 5 cases at the high school and a total of 7 cases at the feeder elementary schools. The Glen Burnie feeder system had the fewest active cases, 3. The Glen Burnie System had one each at the high, middle, and elementary school levels.

I used the feeder systems as reported by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools in the Educational Facilities Master Plan to build this map of cases by feeder system. The map only reflects schools that are part of a location-based feeder system in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Not all schools had completed contract tracing for the reporting period; thus, there may be additional cases not captured in this data set. This is a proof of concept map. In the future, I would like to add detailed information about all schools in that cluster to the map, but that will take additional time.

Please see the data notes from the elementary cases post.

Anne Arundel County County Public Schools published data today regarding COVID cases in public schools. Their reporting metrics are different than those reported by the State. I decided to map and publish it. I have not yet checked the data. I need to publish the data to check it.

Default Dot Size

Smallest Dot Size

After playing with the map a bit I decided that the dots were rather overwhelming, so I shrunk them to their smallest possible size. The dots size for the other maps was the default size. I will need to remember to consider dot size in the future.

Notes

These notes are from Anne Arundel County

1. The tables on this page reflect positive cases, confirmed by testing, with an onset date of September 8, 2021, or later that have been made known to Anne Arundel County      Public Schools. Schools/Offices with zero student or staff cases do not appear in the tables. The data also includes cases of COVID-like symptoms in which a      person is not tested for a period of 48 hours after onset of symptoms, and probable cases, which occur when an individual with COVID-like symptoms is found to have close contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. Such cases are treated as if they are positive for COVID-19 in terms of identification of close contacts and potential exposures. Cases that appear on this dashboard and are later determined to be false positives or the like will be deleted in subsequent updates.

2. An “active case” is one in which the individual who tested positive is still under 10-day quarantine.

3. A positive case, COVID-like symptoms case, or probable case does not mean the individual exposed others at school or work, or that the individual contracted the virus at school or work.

4. Students enrolled in virtual-only learning and who are not part of any extracurricular activities are not included in this data.

5. Due to differences in reporting methodology, this information may not match the data presented by the Maryland Department of Health.

The Anne Arundel County Public Schools data will be updated each Wednesday.
